7 things… well 8 things…

** wrote this a week ago, not sure why I did not post it, emotions was running away with me then **

I see most bloggers do a 7 (or 10 or 4 or 3) things about them you would not know. Truthfully, I rarely care. I have a problem with this all “self-promotion”. So here are 8 things, that either bother me, or are about me, some of which you might already know. I’m also linking some, what I think is, great videos on the topic.

*Spoiler Alert* this will be a moan and groan post. Its been a crappy week and a specially sad and disturbing day.

#1 Women

Why do women read, follow truly lame ass advice? I’m so lucky, to have grown up with extremely strong and loving women in my life, family and friends. Here’s a tip girls, no man is ever good enough to pine after, to run after, or to have you heart broken. Stop it. You’re worth much more. So, grow up, move on, be successful and for all that is holy and unholy, be yourself.

#2 Men

Grow a pair. Really. Stop the rape jokes. Stop the homophobia. Stop being a dick.

#3 Atheism

I’m an atheist, some people need to deal with it. Don’t try and convert me, or pray for me, or damn me to your hell (its your hell, you burn in it). I don’t hate god, I don’t believe in him, therefore I can’t hate him. I grew up with the best parents and sister a guy would want, so its not a spiteful rebellion. I have no problems with the people that believe in superstitious nonsense, I do have a problem with the superstitious nonsense. It hurts people. Even when you don’t think so, it breeds ignorance and hate.
Here’s a thought, instead of thanking god for saving a persons life, rather thank the doctor. This also goes for UFOs, star signs and pseudo-fucking-science. Lets all grow up.

#4 South Africa

I love the people of our country and yes, its beautiful, but lets be honest, its not some kind of holy land! We have a corrupt government, corrupt cops, we condone racism, sexism, homophobia. And we laugh about it? What the hell is wrong with us?

#5 Journalists

Love you guys. Keep fighting the good fight, and expose corruption, honour those that do good. I’ve got your back.

#6 Cancer

Fuck FUCK cancer. Sounds so useless. Like HIV/Aids, get yourself tested, guys and girls. Its never to early. Science is making huge strides in early detection, the earlier you know, the better your chances are. Do it.

#7 Work

I am my work. I am my job. And I hate it. I really really do. I need to refocus, or start over, or do something. Not next year, NOW. (and I am…)

#8 Bonus Item!

CARL SAGAN!

Well, that’s 8 things, its more a rant I needed to do, and its done. There is more to be said, but not now. Today I’ve received three pieces of information that made me terrible angry, sad, shocked. Two of those affected people I love so much, and I feel helpless. Some things, we can’t fight. There is nothing to fight. We need to let go. No more regrets.

Connecting two wireless routers with WDS

A quick and short guide on how I connected two wireless routers at home via WDS (Wireless Distribution System). I did this to enable a desktop computer to connect to the internet, with out laying a 10m+ cable, yes I’m lazy. The two routers are a Telkom Duoplus 300WR which is connected to the internet and a Billion 3200G wireless router, on to which a file storage computer connects.

So what I had was,

[desktop computer] ——-> Billion

[laptop and workstation] ——-> Duoplus ——-> internet

First, plug in the Duoplus on a computer with a LAN cable, the setup basically,

channel : 11
mode : B only
disable QoS
security is none (I couldn’t set this up with some kind of security)
WDS is Crude, downlink #1 is MAC address of Billion WIRELESS WLAN (this is important)

Then connect the Billion with a LAN cable,

Setup on Billion :
Operation Mode is Bridge
Band : B
Channel : 11
Mode is WDS
Enable Universal Repeater Mode, Extended SSID is SSID of Duoplus
Security is none
WDS is enabled
Add WIRELESS WLAN MAC address of Duoplus

Some notes,

I choose channel 11, but you can choose any one, as long as they are the same, same with the band.

The wireless is now without security, now where I stay that’s not a problem, but I could not get it to work with WPA/WEP enabled. I think might work with enabling certain MAC addresses on the wireless.

Women

Mom

My rock. And I could end it here, what more could I say. The one person in life who I can not disappoint, the one person who will always listen to me. The softest heart you’ll ever meet, and a infectious laugh like no other. She is a great friend and always laughs at my jokes. I don’t believe in psycho-mambo-jumbo and she knows this, but she knows I love a dearly and I’ll always will love her. (Even when she is in a old age home in Baberton! – inside joke!)

Grandmother Moll
The person in life I admire the most. What a amazing amazing woman. Smartest person I’ve ever met, heart filled with charity, and a love for teaching like no other. Thank you for supporting me always, always having good advice and always having a level head when teaching me. Thank you for opening up the world of science and wonder to my eyes.

Sister
The strongest woman I’ve ever met, and one of the best moms I know. Thank you for being a great friend and keeping my head level and down to earth. Thank you for sharing your two kids with me, I love them like my own. I know your home and heart will always be open for me, and you’ll always find support here.

Grandmother Strydom
Kindest person I’ve known, up to end always ready with a quick smile and laugh, full of interesting stories and she introduced me to cooking. I can still feel her soft hands taking mine and blessing me. Matriarch over a huge family, she always took care to get to know her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Those where my family women. People I’ve known from nose-picking child to sometimes-mature adult. Thank you, and I love you all so much.

Best Friends
You girls make me laugh, always have, you’re sound boards to my problems and questions about the fairer sex. Thank you for sharing so much of your lives with me, always making me feel special when we visit, and thank you for the opportunity to be god father and Supreme Council to the cutest little brunette ever. May she become a great woman like her mother. Here is to many more laughs, tears, gasps and late night discussions.

Wives of Friends
You are all perfect in my eyes, my friends choose you and I could not be happier. You all are very important to me, not just because you are married to my friends, but because you make them happy, and that is important. Thank you for the teasing and ears when needed and sharing your families with me.

Eliza and Madison
A short note to you two girls, who are to young to probably read or understand this, but, listen to your mothers, they are so important to me, you will in time grow up to know them like I do. And remember, you’ll always be welcome and loved here.

To all other women who I know. Be brave. Be strong. Be who you are, be yourself. Be beautiful and be happy. I hope and trust for lives filled with love and laughter.

Have a great Women’s Day.

Much love.

The new Space Age

With the retirement of the NASA Space Shuttle program, and cancelation of some other NASA missions, it seems that the new space age will be commercially driven. Cheaper, faster and with more international cooperation, I for one am looking forward this, the new space age.

some facts on nuclear energy

Some say nuclear energy is ready to make a comback; some say it’s still too dangerous. How do you know which to believe?

Great quote

It doesn’t seem to me that this fantastically marvelous universe, this tremendous range of time and space and different kinds of animals, and all the different planets, and all these atoms with all their motions, and so on, all this complicated thing can merely be a stage so that God can watch human beings struggle for good and evil — which is the view that religion has. The stage is too big for the drama.

What is it about science that really gets your blood running?

This sums it up perfectly for me…

“The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it’s just wonderful. And … the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.”

  • Response to the question “What is it about science that really gets your blood running?” to Douglas Adams,  as quoted by Richard Dawkins in his eulogy for Adams (17 September 2001)
